Cleopatra VII was Macedonian Greek by descent, the first of her dynasty to bother learning Egyptian. She came to the throne at eighteen alongside a younger brother, was pushed out in a palace coup, and returned with Julius Caesar's backing after having herself brought into his presence past hostile guards. She bore him a son, Caesarion. After Caesar's murder she allied with Mark Antony, politically and personally, and their combined fleet was beaten at Actium in 31 BC by Octavian.
