Who Edgar Allan Poe was

Orphaned before he was three, Poe was taken in but never adopted by the Allan family of Richmond, and quarrelled with his guardian John Allan over gambling debts. He tried the army and West Point, then made a precarious living as a magazine editor and critic — feared for reviews sharp enough to earn him the nickname the tomahawk man. The Murders in the Rue Morgue introduced the ratiocinating detective that Conan Doyle later borrowed. The Raven, published in 1845, made him famous and paid him about nine dollars. His wife Virginia died of tuberculosis at twenty-four. Two years later he was found delirious in Baltimore in clothes not his own and died days after.
