In May 1796 he took material from a lesion on the hand of the milkmaid Sarah Nelmes, inoculated eight-year-old James Phipps, and weeks later exposed him to smallpox. Nothing happened. The Royal Society rejected his paper, so he published An Inquiry himself in 1798. The word vaccine comes from vacca, Latin for cow. Parliament eventually granted him funds; he vaccinated the poor without charge in a hut in his garden. Smallpox was declared eradicated in 1980.
