Who Joan of Arc was

Joan grew up in Domrémy during the Hundred Years' War and said that from about thirteen she heard the voices of saints telling her to drive the English from France. She persuaded a local garrison commander, then the dauphin Charles, and rode to Orléans in 1429 with the relieving force. The siege broke in nine days. She pushed the army on to Reims, where Charles was crowned with her standing beside him. Captured at Compiègne in 1430 and sold to the English, she was tried by a church court on charges including wearing men's clothes, and burned at Rouen on 30 May 1431. A retrial annulled the verdict in 1456; she was canonised in 1920.
