King, Letter from Birmingham Jail, 1963

Who Martin Luther King Jr. was

King finished Morehouse at nineteen and took a doctorate in systematic theology at Boston University. Newly installed at Dexter Avenue Baptist Church, he was chosen to lead the boycott that followed Rosa Parks's arrest in December 1955; it lasted 381 days and ended with bus segregation ruled unconstitutional. He built the SCLC, was arrested some thirty times, and wrote the Letter from Birmingham Jail on newspaper margins in reply to clergy who called his campaign untimely. He spoke last at the March on Washington in August 1963, received the Nobel Peace Prize at thirty-five, and turned to poverty and the Vietnam War before he was assassinated in Memphis in April 1968 supporting striking sanitation workers.
