Anthony, final public speech, 1906

Who Susan B. Anthony was

Raised a Quaker in Massachusetts, Anthony began in temperance work and was refused permission to speak at a convention because she was a woman, which redirected her entirely. With Elizabeth Cady Stanton she published The Revolution, organised the National Woman Suffrage Association, and gathered petitions year after year. She and Stanton opposed the Fifteenth Amendment because it enfranchised Black men and not women, a stance that split the movement and drew lasting criticism. She voted in Rochester in the 1872 presidential election, was arrested, convicted after a judge directed the verdict, and never paid the hundred dollars. The Nineteenth Amendment was ratified in 1920.
