Angelou, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings

Who Maya Angelou was

Marguerite Johnson was raped at seven by her mother's boyfriend; after he was killed she stopped speaking for years and read her way through the library of Stamps, Arkansas. She became San Francisco's first Black female streetcar conductor at sixteen, then a dancer, calypso singer and actor. In Ghana in the early sixties she worked as a journalist and knew Malcolm X; back in the United States she organised for Martin Luther King Jr. James Baldwin goaded her into writing the memoir that became I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings in 1969. She wrote six more volumes, plays and screenplays, taught at Wake Forest for three decades, and delivered On the Pulse of Morning for Bill Clinton.
