Who Nelson Mandela was

Mandela trained as a lawyer and opened the first Black law firm in Johannesburg with Oliver Tambo. After the Sharpeville massacre he helped found Umkhonto we Sizwe, the ANC's armed wing, and was sentenced to life at the Rivonia Trial in 1964, where he told the court he was prepared to die for a democratic and free society. Eighteen of his twenty-seven years were on Robben Island, breaking limestone. He refused conditional release in 1985. Freed in 1990, he negotiated with F. W. de Klerk through violence that nearly derailed everything, shared the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993, and served one presidential term from 1994, setting up the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
